NYC Site Safety Manager Certification Requirements


NYC Site Safety Manager Requirements – NYC DOB:

  • Certified Site safety Managers must be onsite at all construction or demolitions of major buildings that are 15 or moreb> stories.

NYC DOB Minimum Requirements for Site Safety Manager:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to read, write, and understand the English language, and
  • Meet one of the 6 qualifications listed in the table below and be able to provide the required documentation to verify experience
  • Have completed a DOB approved Site Safety Manager Training Course and
  • Have good moral character, so as to not adversely impact upon fitness to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Site Safety Manager

Part A (requirements):

  • Be a New York State Licensed Professional Engineer
  • Have completed a DOB approved Site Safety Manager orientation course within one year prior to application.
  • Have 3 years experience supervising major buildings. **

OR

Part B (requirements):

  • Be a New York State Registered Architect
  • Have completed a DOB approved Site Safety Manager orientation course within one year prior to application
  • Have 3 years of experience supervising major buildings. **

OR

Part C (requirements):

  • Have 8 years of construction supervision experience, within the last 10 years, including 5 years supervising major buildings; and
  • Have completed a DOB approved 40 Hour Site Safety Manager course within one year prior to application.

OR

Part D (requirements):

  • Have completed at paid 18 month on the job training program working on major buildings under the direct and continuing supervision of a certified Site Safety Manager covering all aspects of Site Safety management and all phases of building construction from the commencement of construction until the building is completely enclosed and have all required documents to demonstrate completion of the training program.
  • Have completed a DOB approved 40 Hour Site Safety Manager course within one year prior to application.

OR

Part E (requirements):

  • Have a satisfactory equivalent of related experience and/or education ***
  • Have completed a DOB approved 40 Hour Site Safety Manager course and a 30 Hour OSHA safety course within one year prior to application.

OR

Part F (requirements):

  • Have 3 years of experience as a Department certified site safety coordinator and
  • Have completed a DOB approved 40 Hour Site Safety Manager course within one year prior to application.



** Major Building as defined by NYC DOB:

  • 10 or more stories, or 125 feet or more in height, or 100,000 square feet or more of lot coverage, regardless of height, or as designated by the commissioner of the DOB.

***Site Safety Manager - Satisfactory Equivalent of Related Experience Guidelines

  1. Five years of experience as a building code enforcement official; or
  2. Eight years of experience as a safety official (eg. OSHA or safety inspector for a construction firm); or
  3. Ten years experience working in a construction trade (such as a carpenter or mason), three years of which must be on buildings at least 10 stories or 100 feet in height or with a lot coverage of 100,000 square feet or more, and two years of which must be in an on-site supervisory position
    • Each year of formal training or education in a program with emphasis on construction at a college, technical or trade school may be substituted for one year of construction work up to a maximum of three years
    • One year of experience as a Site Safety Coordinator working on-site may be substituted for the two years of required construction supervisory experience
  4. Five years of experience as the safety director of a construction firm; or
  5. Six years of experience as an on-site construction supervisor, five of which must be in major buildings plus four years of formal training or education (defined above). One half year is given for each year of education or training for a required total of eight years equivalent experience.
